Senior Grades
Maj Gen – Major General – Reserved for current and past National Commander only
Brig Gen – Brigadier General – Reserved for National Command Staff
Col – Colonel – Reserved for current and past Wing and Region Commanders; and Regional and National Staff
Lt Col – Lieutenant Colonel – Highest grade possible for most senior members
Maj – Major
Capt – Captain
1st Lt – First Lieutenant
2d Lt – Second Lieutenant
SM – Senior Member – Reserved for first time Senior Members who have just joined
**A Senior member that wishes to join CAP who is also in the armed forces may opt to keep their current military NCO rank, regardless of their branch of service. If they do, there are currently no options for promotion in CAP, unless promoted in the military, or be promoted to 2d Lt in CAP. A Senior NCO will outrank a SM, but be below a Flight Officer.**
